I began my internship at Kijabe Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, I secured a permanent position elsewhere, but I always knew I wanted to return home, shares Dr. Ngendo, one of our residents in our pioneer Obstetrics-Gynaecology residency program.
Inspired by her mother, who was a practising nurse, Dr. Ngendos passion for healthcare was kindled at an early age. My mother always cared for patients with such tenderness and kindness. She taught me to do the same, and that inspired my dream of becoming a doctor, she recalls.
Her first permanent position with us was at our Naivasha Medical Centre#KijabeNdogo.
Serving as a Medical Officer at Kijabe Ndogo made me realize how much I was drawn to Obstetrics and Gynaecology compared to other specialties. I knew thats what I wanted to pursue, she explains.
In September last year, Dr. Ngendo, along with Dr. Joshua, became our first-ever Obstetrics-Gynaecology residents.
Being a pioneer in a residency program is a mix of excitement, challenge, and responsibility. You get the chance to innovate, bring fresh ideas, and contribute directly to the development of the curriculum, she shares.
After one year of training, they both sat for their end-of-year exams and passed! The exams entail both theory and clinical components. We have a CAT every 4-6 months and final exams in August each year, she continues.
Dr. Ngendo appreciates the teamwork at AIC Kijabe Hospital and the holistic care provided to OB patients, including spiritual, social, and medical support. I love how the hospital is advancing the OB department. We are truly here for a bigger purposeto touch lives and help in the growth of maternity care in Kenya and beyond! she concludes.
